Sudan: Committee for Justice Highlights Fact-Finding Mission Report Holding the “Sudanese Army” and “Rapid Support Forces” Responsible for War Crimes

Less than 1 minute Reading Time: Minutes

Committee for Justice expressed its shock at the findings of the latest report by the Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on Sudan, released under the title “War of Atrocities”. The report documented the widespread and systematic targeting of civilians by both the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces, in violations amounting to war crimes and crimes against humanity, and possibly even genocide.

The report confirmed that both parties carried out direct attacks against civilians and inflicted large-scale destruction on vital infrastructure, including hospitals, markets, and displacement camps, leading to the displacement of more than 12 million people and leaving over half of the population suffering from acute food insecurity. It further highlighted the use of starvation as a weapon of war, and detailed horrific abuses by the Rapid Support Forces, including killings, torture, mass rape, sexual slavery, forced displacement, and persecution based on ethnic, political, and social grounds.

The report warned that behind every documented case lies a shattered family and a devastated community, calling on the international community to take urgent action through imposing an arms embargo on Sudan, supporting the International Criminal Court, establishing an independent judicial mechanism, and activating universal jurisdiction to prosecute perpetrators and impose targeted sanctions on those responsible for these crimes.

The Committee stresses that international silence in the face of such atrocities only fuels impunity and urges all actors to shoulder their urgent legal and humanitarian responsibilities to protect civilians and ensure accountability for the perpetrators.
