The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has documented the killing of three people and the injury of four humanitarian workers after a humanitarian aid convoy came under drone strikes while en route to cities in the Kordofan region in central Sudan, where ongoing clashes continue between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
According to CFJ’s findings, the convoy was transporting food supplies and humanitarian assistance to Kadugli and Dilling in South Kordofan State when it was struck in the Kartala area by drones believed to belong to the Rapid Support Forces. The attack resulted in three fatalities and left four other humanitarian workers injured.
CFJ noted that the convoy was targeted while carrying out a purely humanitarian mission at a time when the Kordofan region is suffering from extremely dire humanitarian conditions and severe shortages of food and medicine due to the escalating armed conflict.
The Committee emphasized that targeting aid convoys and humanitarian personnel constitutes a serious violation of international humanitarian law, which grants special protection to relief workers and civilian infrastructure and obligates all parties to the conflict to ensure safe and unimpeded delivery of assistance to civilians.
CFJ calls for an urgent, independent investigation into the attack on the humanitarian convoy, the identification and accountability of those responsible, and for all parties to the conflict to adhere to international humanitarian law. The organization also urges the provision of full protection to humanitarian workers and the secure passage of aid to affected areas without obstruction or attack.
