Sudan: Committee For Justice Documents the Killing of Journalist Nour Suleiman Nour in RSF Shelling

Less than 1 minute Reading Time: Minutes

The Committee For Justice (CFJ) has condemned the killing of journalist Nour Suleiman Nour, who died from severe injuries sustained in a shelling carried out by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) targeting his home in El Fasher, North Darfur.

CFJ stated that this incident constitutes a grave violation of the right to life, and is part of a recurring pattern of systematic targeting of journalists and media professionals in Sudan — whether during the course of their work or in their private lives — amid the absence of legal protections and judicial accountability.

The Committee emphasized that the killing of Nour Suleiman Nour amounts to a crime against humanity under international law, and reflects the escalation of violations against journalists since the outbreak of war. These violations include killings, abductions, arbitrary detentions, and enforced disappearances, as documented by the Sudanese Journalists Syndicate and international organizations.

CFJ holds the RSF fully responsible for this crime and calls for an independent international investigation, the prosecution of those responsible, and guarantees that perpetrators do not escape accountability, in accordance with the Geneva Conventions and international humanitarian law.

The Committee also urged Sudan to uphold its obligations under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) and the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, both of which guarantee freedom of expression and protection of journalists, and prohibit the targeting of civilians in armed conflicts.

CFJ stressed that the continuation of such violations against journalists and media workers poses a serious threat to press freedom, undermines the rule of law, and places Sudan under international scrutiny. The Committee called for urgent measures to protect journalists and ensure a safe environment for media work
