The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has documented the arrest of lawyer Adam Ahmed Al‑Dignawi, Deputy Head of the Lawyers Syndicate in White Nile State and a leading member of the Arab Socialist Ba’ath Party, who was detained from his office in Rabak by a security force affiliated with the General Intelligence Service.
According to CFJ’s documentation, the lawyer’s detention came after he circulated an announcement regarding the return of the “Committee for Dismantling the June 30 Regime, Recovery of Public Funds, and Anti‑Corruption” in a WhatsApp group for lawyers, in addition to responding to a comment posted by another participant.
CFJ noted that Al‑Dignawi was later released after undergoing interrogation, but was ordered to report again to the so‑called “security cell,” raising concerns about continued harassment and pressure against him.
The Committee stressed that detaining lawyers for expressing their views or engaging in their legitimate professional activities constitutes a violation of the legal safeguards afforded to the legal profession—particularly the protections granted under the Law on Advocacy—and undermines the independence of lawyers and their essential role in defending rights and freedoms.
CFJ calls for an immediate end to the targeting of lawyers over their professional work or peaceful expression of opinion. The Committee also urges authorities to respect the legal protections granted to members of the legal profession, refrain from any further harassment of lawyer Adam Ahmed Al‑Dignawi, and ensure that no future actions are taken against him. CFJ emphasizes the need to uphold the rule of law and protect freedom of expression.
