Sudan: Committee for Justice Documents the Arbitrary Arrest of Activist Alaa Eldin Al‑Shareef in Gedaref

Less than 1 minute Reading Time: Minutes

The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has documented the arrest of activist Alaa Eldin Al‑Shareef, known as “Watan,” on the evening of Thursday, 15 January 2026, by security forces in Gedaref State, without presenting any legal arrest warrant or providing an official explanation for the reasons behind his detention.

According to information collected by CFJ, Al‑Shareef was apprehended under conditions lacking the minimum required legal safeguards. His family and lawyer were not informed of his place of detention or the nature of the accusations against him, raising serious concerns regarding his physical and legal safety.

CFJ stressed that this pattern of arbitrary arrests carried out outside the framework of the law constitutes a clear violation of the right to liberty and personal security, and contradicts basic fair‑trial guarantees, including the right to be informed of the reasons for arrest and the right to be promptly brought before a competent judicial authority.

The organization called for the immediate disclosure of Alaa Eldin Al‑Shareef’s whereabouts, ensuring his safety, enabling him to communicate with his family and lawyer, and releasing him unless clear charges are brought against him in accordance with proper legal procedures.
