Sudan: Committee for Justice Documents Arbitrary Arrest and Serious Violations Against Activist Muneeb Abdelaziz in Dongola

Less than 1 minute Reading Time: Minutes

The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has documented a series of grave legal and human rights violations surrounding the arrest of activist Muneeb Abdelaziz, in an incident that reflects a systematic pattern of repressive practices against activists outside the rule of law, using judicial procedures as a tool to restrict freedoms.

According to CFJ’s documentation, Abdelaziz was arrested on 19 December 2025 in the Maqasir area of Dongola, without the presentation of any official warrant issued by a competent authority—constituting a clear breach of basic procedural guarantees under national law, which prohibit deprivation of liberty without a lawful and reasoned order.

The detention process was marked by complete opacity regarding the responsible authority, as Abdelaziz’s whereabouts remained unknown during the initial stages of his detention. His case was later transferred from the police to Military Intelligence, raising serious questions about the legality of the process and exposing inconsistencies and overlapping jurisdictions.

CFJ noted that initial charges filed against Abdelaziz were vague and unfounded, including accusations of “public nuisance,” which were later dismissed. Despite this, he was not released as required by law; instead, his detention was recycled through the filing of more serious charges without new evidence—an abusive practice aimed at prolonging arbitrary detention under the guise of legality.

The committee also documented the denial of Abdelaziz’s and his family’s right to communication, and his inability to learn the nature of the charges during the early stages of detention—constituting a serious violation of detainee rights, undermining the right to defense, and causing severe psychological and emotional harm to his family.

CFJ affirmed that these facts amount to a complete model of arbitrary detention, revealing the use of “case recycling” as a tool to legitimize prolonged unlawful detention, in flagrant violation of constitutional rights and international human rights standards. The committee warned of the grave implications of continuing such practices on public freedoms and the rule of law.

CFJ called for the immediate release of Muneeb Abdelaziz, an end to all violations linked to his detention, accountability for the authorities responsible, and guarantees against the use of judicial and security bodies as instruments of political repression and retaliation against peaceful activists.
