Sudan: Committee for Justice Condemns Shelling of Dilling and Targeting of Residential Neighborhoods, Calls for End to Attacks on Civilians

Less than 1 minute Reading Time: Minutes

The Committee for Justice (CFJ) condemns the heavy artillery shelling that struck the city of Dilling in South Kordofan State, which lasted for more than nine consecutive hours on 23 March and was attributed to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The attack resulted in civilian casualties, with deaths and injuries reported.

According to CFJ’s documentation, the shelling indiscriminately targeted densely populated residential neighborhoods and public facilities inside the city, leaving no fewer than 14 people dead or injured in an initial toll. The intensity of the attack caused widespread panic among residents, forcing many to flee toward safer areas.

Eyewitnesses reported that shells fell heavily on civilian homes and local markets, causing extensive destruction to private property and critical infrastructure, amid escalating military operations in the region.

CFJ stressed that the targeting of residential areas and indiscriminate shelling of civilian neighborhoods constitute grave violations of international humanitarian law, which strictly prohibits attacks on civilians and obligates all parties to the conflict to take necessary precautions to prevent harm to civilians.

The Committee for Justice calls for the immediate cessation of attacks targeting civilians in Dilling, and for an urgent, independent, and transparent investigation into the shelling incident, including identifying and holding accountable those responsible. CFJ also urges urgent measures to protect the civilian population and prevent the recurrence of such violations, in full accordance with international humanitarian law.
