Sudan: Committee for Justice Condemns Death Sentences Against Eight Defendants in Omdurman, Calls for Halt to Execution and Fair‑Trial Guarantees

Less than 1 minute Reading Time: Minutes

The Committee for Justice (CFJ) condemns the death sentences issued by the Omdurman General Criminal Court against eight defendants, who were sentenced to death by hanging after being convicted of assisting the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in undermining the constitutional order and waging war against the state.

According to statements released by the Public Prosecution, the defendants were found guilty of collaborating with what was described as “rebel forces,” waging war against the state, and attempting to undermine the constitutional system. Among those sentenced to death is a citizen identified as Osama Al‑Daqeel.

CFJ stressed that the issuance of death sentences—particularly in the context of an active armed conflict and exceptional circumstances—raises serious concerns regarding the availability of fair‑trial guarantees. The organization underscored the need to ensure full access to defense rights, public hearings, judicial independence, and the right of defendants to exercise all avenues of appeal.

The Committee emphasized that the death penalty represents the most severe punishment that can be imposed on a human being, and that any failure to uphold fair‑trial standards or ensure procedural integrity renders its execution an irreversible and grave risk to the right to life.

CFJ calls for an immediate halt to the implementation of the death sentences issued against the defendants until all stages of litigation have been fully exhausted. The Committee also urges a thorough judicial review of the rulings by a higher, independent, and impartial court. Furthermore, CFJ calls for a broader review of laws and policies related to the death penalty in Sudan, in line with global trends aimed at limiting its use as a step toward its eventual abolition.
