The Committee for Justice (CFJ) is organizing a side event entitled “Sudan in Crisis: Documenting Violations to Advance Long-Term Accountability” on the sidelines of the 60th Session of the Human Rights Council.
Since the conflict erupted in 2023, Sudan has witnessed grave and recurrent abuses, including arbitrary detention, enforced disappearances, extrajudicial killings, torture, forced displacement, deliberate attacks on civilians. These violations underscore the urgent need to secure credible evidence and to link documentation efforts with pathways to accountability.
The side event will examine the current human rights situation in Sudan and map patterns of violations documented since 2023. Speakers will discuss practical methodologies for safe, survivor-centered documentation under conditions of insecurity and displacement; the preservation and verification of digital and physical evidence; and the protection of those conducting this work. The conversation will highlight how rigorously collected evidence can inform national proceedings, support regional and international mechanisms -particularly the ongoing work of Fact-Finding Missions- so that accountability efforts are sustained beyond immediate crises. Such evidence will also play a vital role in future transitional justice processes, ensuring that victims and survivors’ experiences are recognized and that pathways to truth, justice, and reparations are grounded in credible documentation. Thus, documentation efforts extend beyond immediate reporting needs to serve as a foundation for long-term justice and accountability.
The event will take place on Friday, 12 September 2025, from 16:00 to 17:00, in Room VIII at the United Nations Headquarters in Geneva (Palais des Nations). A distinguished group of experts and Sudanese human rights defenders will participate, including:
- Mona Rishmawi – Member of the UN FFM on Sudan
- Commissioner. Hatem Essaiem – Chair of the AU/ACHPR Joint FFM on Sudan
- Nazik Kabalo – Sudanese WHRDs
- Mohamed Osman – Human Rights Watch
- Musbah Issa – AWAFY Sudanese Organization

- The discussion will be moderated by Eva Nudd – Committee for Justice
