Sudan: CFJ Documents the Death of a Detainee in Dagaris Prison After 18 Months of Detention, Calls for Investigation

Less than 1 minute Reading Time: Minutes

The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has documented the death of detainee Al‑Baqir Al‑Tahir inside Dagaris Prison in Nyala, South Darfur, after approximately 18 months in detention, amid severely deteriorating humanitarian conditions in the facility.

According to CFJ’s findings, the detainee died inside his place of detention, raising concerns that his death may be linked to poor detention conditions and failure to provide adequate medical care—particularly given previously documented reports of extreme overcrowding, food shortages, and a lack of proper healthcare inside the prison.

CFJ reiterated that the continued detention of individuals under such circumstances poses a direct threat to their lives and constitutes a violation of both the right to life and the right to humane treatment of detainees.

The Committee for Justice calls for an urgent, independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Al‑Baqir Al‑Tahir inside Dagaris Prison, with full transparency regarding the cause of death and accountability for any negligence or misconduct. CFJ also urges immediate improvements to detention conditions in the facility, including the provision of adequate healthcare for all detainees.
