Sudan: CFJ Condemns the Killing of Teacher Mohamed Hamid Obeid and Calls for Urgent Investigation and Accountability

Less than 1 minute

The Committee For Justice (CFJ) has condemned the killing of teacher Mohamed Hamid Obeid, who was fatally attacked during a peaceful march in the Mazroub area of North Kordofan State, central Sudan — a region witnessing an increase in violations against civilians, including education professionals.

CFJ affirms that the killing of Mr. Obeid constitutes a grave violation of the right to life and reflects the systematic targeting of civilians amid the ongoing armed conflict in the country. The Committee warns that such acts may amount to crimes against humanity under international law.

The Committee emphasized that teachers, as key actors in community development, are entitled to special protection under international legal instruments, including the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) and the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, both of which have been ratified by Sudan. These instruments guarantee the right to life, personal security, and freedom of peaceful assembly, and explicitly prohibit the targeting of civilians in armed conflicts.

CFJ holds the responsible parties — whoever they may be — legally and morally accountable, and urgently calls for an independent investigation to uncover the circumstances of the crime, prosecute the perpetrators, and ensure they do not escape justice, in accordance with the Geneva Conventions and international humanitarian law.

The Committee also urges authorities to take immediate measures to protect teachers and education workers and ensure a safe environment for educational activities, free from threats and violations
