The Committee for Justice (CFJ) welcomes the efforts undertaken by the National Committee for the Review of Prisoners and Prisons in Libya, which have resulted in the release of several groups of detainees and the regularization of their legal status—particularly those acquitted by courts, issued release orders by the Public Prosecution, or who have completed their sentences.
CFJ has followed the Committee’s field visits to several detention facilities, which included reviewing detainee files, verifying the legality of arrest procedures, referring eligible cases to the Public Prosecution, and enforcing judicial rulings, including previously unexecuted release orders.
The Committee for Justice described these measures as a positive step toward strengthening the rule of law, but emphasized the urgent need to accelerate the ongoing efforts to end the suffering of prisoners and detainees—especially those held arbitrarily outside the legal framework—given the difficult conditions inside detention facilities.
CFJ calls for the completion of a comprehensive review of all detainees’ cases without exception, and for the immediate enforcement of all release orders and judicial decisions. The Committee also urges full cooperation from all relevant authorities with the National Committee to help end the issue of arbitrary detention and enhance respect for human rights inside Libyan prisons.
