Gambia: UN Concerns Over Ongoing Challenges Facing Children in the Country

Less than 1 minute Reading Time: Minutes

Experts from the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child raised concerns during a dialogue held on January 22 in Geneva about the persistent challenges facing children in Gambia. These include child trafficking, gaps in birth registration systems, and the need for increased investment in education and social protection for children at risk.

The experts emphasized the importance of allocating sufficient resources to safeguard the rights of all Gambian children, particularly those living in marginalized communities.

At the same time, the committee commended the Gambian delegation for the country’s innovative approach to promoting children’s rights through the establishment of a Children’s Parliament. This initiative empowers young people to raise pressing issues directly impacting them and their communities.

Committee members also highlighted Gambia’s commitment to advancing children’s rights as outlined in the Convention on the Rights of the Child, which the country ratified in 1990.
