The Committee for Justice has monitored the death of Khalil Mohamed Abu Heba, a resident of El-Mahalla El-Kubra, inside the Third El-Mahalla Police Station, reportedly as a result of fatal torture during his detention.
According to CFJ, security forces arrested Abu Heba and took him to the police station with his hands cuffed. Officers allegedly began torturing him shortly after his arrival, leading to his death. The incident reportedly stemmed from his refusal to hand over his car during the arrest.
CFJ has called for an independent and prompt investigation into the circumstances surrounding Abu Heba’s death, and for those responsible to be held accountable. The organization also urged Egyptian authorities to improve detention conditions across all custodial facilities.
Furthermore, CFJ reiterated its urgent demand for the enactment of a comprehensive anti-torture law that aligns with the UN Convention Against Torture, to which Egypt is a signatory. The law should explicitly criminalize torture and recognize it as a crime that does not expire with time.
With this case, the number of deaths monitored by CFJ inside Egyptian prisons and detention centers since the beginning of 2025 has risen to 45 — following the documentation of 50 deaths throughout 2024.
