The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has documented the death of political detainee Hesham Makki on 31 December 2025 while being held in Wadi Al‑Natrun Prison, following a severe deterioration in his health under prolonged harsh detention conditions and the denial of necessary medical care.
According to available information, Makki was transferred to Shebin Al‑Kom Hospital after his health suddenly deteriorated. However, he passed away there shortly after, before his body was later handed over to his family and laid to rest.
CFJ noted that Makki, who had been serving a life sentence, endured years of continuous transfers between police stations and various detention facilities—conditions that lacked even the minimum standards of stability and medical care. These circumstances had a direct and cumulative impact on his physical health, contributing to its decline over time.
CFJ holds the relevant authorities fully responsible for the death of political detainee Hesham Makki, stressing that the incident reflects a recurring pattern of medical neglect and poor detention conditions, and constitutes a grave violation of the right to life.
The committee calls for an urgent and independent investigation into the circumstances of his death, accountability for those responsible for negligence, the provision of adequate medical care for all political detainees, and an end to policies that endanger the lives of individuals held in detention.
