Less than 1 minute Reading Time: Minutes

The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has documented the death of lawyer and human rights defender Shams El‑Din Ahmed Attallah inside the 10th of Ramadan Prison, following a deterioration in his health during detention and the denial of necessary medical care—constituting a blatant violation of the rights to life and health.

Shams El‑Din had been held in detention since November 2021 in connection with Case No. 2380 of 2021 (Supreme State Security), due to his professional work providing legal defense to individuals detained in political cases. His death highlights the serious risks faced by human rights lawyers while carrying out their professional duties in an environment marked by arbitrary restrictions on fundamental freedoms.

CFJ called on the Egyptian authorities to open an urgent and independent investigation into the detention conditions that led to the death of Shams El‑Din Ahmed Attallah, to hold accountable all those responsible for any negligence or failure that contributed to the deterioration of his health, and to ensure effective protection for all human rights lawyers and defenders against practices that threaten their lives and safety.
