The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has documented a protest organized by workers at Aswan power stations, which operate under the Hydro Power Plants Company—one of the subsidiaries of the Egyptian Electricity Holding Company—calling for salary increases and the implementation of the minimum wage.
During the protest, workers issued a statement addressed to Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat, urging him to intervene to improve their conditions amid soaring prices and persistently low wages.
According to CFJ, one participant stated that the average salary of employees at hydroelectric stations does not exceed EGP 6,000, demanding equal treatment with workers in other electricity production companies who receive allowances and incentives adding nearly EGP 3,000 to their pay.
Workers also called for:
- The disbursement of annual profits alongside the performance incentive.
- Raising the value of the excellence bonus and paying it monthly instead of delaying it for several months.
- Increasing food and lighting allowances.
- Reviewing discriminatory policies among employees of different electricity production companies.
CFJ expressed full solidarity with Aswan power plant workers and stressed the importance of addressing their demands and fulfilling their legitimate rights, particularly the implementation of the minimum wage, reaffirming the need to protect workers’ rights and uphold their dignity.
