Egypt: Committee for Justice Documents Escalation Against Political Detainee Mohamed Adel Amid His Hunger Strike in 10th of Ramadan Prison

The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has documented an escalation by the administration of the 10th of Ramadan Correctional and Rehabilitation Center (10th 4) against political detainee and activist Mohamed Adel, as he enters nearly one month of his hunger strike, which began on 7 December, to demand the proper application of the law—specifically, the deduction of his pre‑trial detention period from his sentence, which would result in his release upon completion of the required term.

According to credible testimonies from his family, recent days have witnessed a sharp shift in the prison administration’s treatment of Mohamed Adel, moving from attempts at containment to direct threats of physical abuse and humiliation, in an effort to break his strike. The family confirmed that senior security officials inside the prison—including the deputy warden and the head of investigations—threatened him with physical assault and degrading treatment if he continued protesting the arbitrary measures imposed on him.

Testimonies also indicate that prison officials used politically charged threats, intended as intimidation and retaliation for his past activism, constituting a serious violation of detainee rights and raising deep concerns about his physical safety.

As part of punitive measures, CFJ documented that the prison administration searched Mohamed Adel’s cell and confiscated his personal belongings, including the water filter provided by his family due to the poor quality of prison water, which had caused him health issues. The administration also threatened to deny him family visits and exercise time, claiming that exercise is a “privilege” rather than a regulatory right—prompting him to refuse to attend exercise in protest against this arbitrary justification.

CFJ warns of a dangerous deterioration in Mohamed Adel’s health, particularly given his pre‑existing conditions: a shoulder muscle tear and atrophy, a knee ligament rupture, and fluid accumulation requiring—according to prior medical reports—surgical knee replacement. Despite these conditions, he continues his hunger strike, relying only on liquids, while the prison administration ignores his medical needs and refuses to officially document his strike.

Legally, his lawyer has filed an official complaint with the Mansoura Appeals Prosecution, requesting an investigation into the threats he is receiving and the official recording of his hunger strike. His family has also submitted an urgent complaint to the National Council for Human Rights regarding the violations and his deteriorating health.

CFJ holds the Ministry of Interior and the administration of 10th of Ramadan Prison (4) fully responsible for the safety and wellbeing of political detainee Mohamed Adel. The committee calls for an immediate end to all forms of threats and retaliation, and for ensuring his access to necessary medical care, as well as respecting his legal and regulatory rights—foremost among them the proper application of the law and his immediate release. CFJ warns that the continuation of these violations may expose his life to imminent danger.
