Press release
Geneva – August 10, 2024
Workers at Al-Nasr Spinning and Weaving Company (Shourbagy), a subsidiary of the Holding Company for Cotton, Spinning, Weaving, and Clothing under Egypt’s Ministry of Public Enterprise Sector, have submitted a list of demands to the company’s management, urging them to accept these demands to ensure the continued operation of the company’s factories.
The workers’ demands include the payment of an incentive equal to 100% of their basic salary each month, the permanent employment of temporary workers, the provision of risk and infection allowances, adherence to promotion schedules, and the application of the minimum wage across all employees.
Additionally, the workers requested the provision of uniforms, compliance with safety standards to protect them at work, installation of exhaust fans, and a daily milk allowance in the spinning departments to safeguard them from cotton dust and respiratory diseases. They also called for the implementation of a shift system.
The demands further include financial bonuses during Ramadan, holidays, and other occasions—similar to what other companies provide—along with the distribution of a company policy booklet to employees to inform them of their rights and obligations, and a special discount on company products.
CFJ has expressed its solidarity with the demands of the workers at Al-Nasr Spinning and Weaving Company (Shourbagy) in Imbaba. CFJ urges the company’s management to respond positively to these demands and support workers’ rights to ensure the continued operation of the company’s factories.
