Press release
Geneva – July 15, 2024

Over the past three days, the monitoring teams of the Committee for Justice (CFJ) have documented the investigation of at least 70 citizens by Egypt’s Supreme State Security Prosecution. These investigations are linked to calls for protests on July 12, which were aimed at denouncing poor economic conditions and demanding the overthrow of the regime.

According to the findings, the State Security Prosecution has charged the detainees with the usual accusations in such cases, including: joining a terrorist group, deliberately spreading false news, using a private account to commit the aforementioned crime, committing a crime of financing terrorism, participating in a criminal agreement, and inciting the commission of a terrorist crime.

The prosecution has ordered the detention of all the accused for 15 days pending investigations in case No. 3434 of 2024.

CFJ condemns these arbitrary measures against the citizens, which violate their rights to freedom, expression, and protest. CFJ calls for an end to these actions and demands the unconditional release of all detainees.
