Egypt: CFJ reports death of a detainee in custody after clash with police officer

Less than 1 minute

The Committee for Justice (CFJ) reported the death of the young man Hazem Fathy inside his detention cell at Nagaa Hammadi Police Station in Qena. He was the individual involved in the well-known altercation with officer Mohamed El Molakkab at a supermarket in Nagaa Hammadi.

The case, which sparked wide controversy at the time, began in March 2025, when Hazem Fathy and a supermarket worker in Qena were arrested following a dispute with the officer that escalated into a physical fight involving punches and kicks. The prosecution then ordered their pretrial detention for 15 days.

According to available information, Hazem died at Nagaa Hammadi Police Station in Qena on 14 August 2025 as a result of poor detention conditions and medical neglect, which detainees in Egyptian detention facilities continued to suffer from.

According to CFJ, this case raises the number of deaths in custody documented in Egypt since the beginning of 2025 to 34, after recording 50 deaths during 2024.

Accurate information about death cases during detention in Egypt can be obtained through the Justice Watch Archive service provided by CFJ, which contains information about more than 14,000 victims and over 30,000 violations. It also monitors violations inside more than 500 places of detention in Egypt.
