Egypt: CFJ Monitors The Second Arrest of Journalist Safaa El-Korbeji, Demands Immediate Release

Less than 1 minute Reading Time: Minutes

The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has monitored the arrest of journalist Safaa El-Korbeji by Egyptian security forces for the second time, following her release in February last year.

According to the committee, El-Korbeji was taken to the Supreme State Security Prosecution, where she was interrogated on October 6 until 2:30 AM. The prosecution has ordered her detention for 15 days pending investigation.

El-Korbeji serves as Head of the Economics Department and Managing Editor at Radio and Television Magazine. She holds the position of Senior Program Presenter at Maspero with the rank of General Manager, and is a member of the Journalists Syndicate. She is not affiliated with any political movements, but is known for her advocacy for the rights of Maspero employees and her opposition to violations against them.

Repeated Arrests and Health Concerns

El-Korbeji was previously subjected to arbitrary detention in April 2022, under Case No. 441 of 2022 (State Security), and remained in custody until her release in February 2024.

She suffers from polio in her right leg and knee effusion in her left leg. During her first detention, she reportedly endured severe medical neglect, which worsened her health condition.

Unjust Dismissal

In addition to her arrest, El-Korbeji faced another violation in April 2025, when she announced her arbitrary dismissal from Radio and Television Magazine, a Maspero-affiliated publication. She accused the institution of retaliating against her for exposing corruption within the organization.

Call for Justice

CFJ expressed its full solidarity with El-Korbeji, stating that her renewed arrest, dismissal, and targeting for exposing corruption constitute a blatant violation of press freedom and journalists’ rights.

CFJ  urged authorities to halt all arbitrary measures against El-Korbeji, ensure her immediate release, and provide adequate protection from any further retaliation due to her professional activities and public stance.
