The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has documented a suicide attempt by a worker at Kom Ombo Sugar Company in Aswan after an arbitrary transfer decision issued by Salah Fathy, CEO and Managing Director of the Sugar and Integrated Industries Company, relocating him to the Hawamdia Sugar Complex in Giza.
According to CFJ, his colleagues managed to save him before he jumped from the top of a boiler approximately 35 meters high.
One worker stated that the transfer decision came just one day after the employee confronted the CEO during his visit to the company, questioning why promises to raise wages and respond to workers’ demands had not been fulfilled following a strike that lasted more than three weeks in August and September.
He added that the worker could not bear the shock of being moved over 850 kilometers from Aswan to Giza.
Another worker described the transfer as part of punitive measures against employees involved in protests, noting that more than 40 temporary workers at the particleboard factory affiliated with Kom Ombo Sugar were dismissed last month for participating in the strike.
CFJ expressed solidarity with the worker at Kom Ombo Sugar Company, stressing his right to freedom of expression without facing any retaliatory or arbitrary actions.
The committee also emphasized the importance of transparency in addressing workers’ demands, particularly amid the difficult economic conditions they are experiencing.
