The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has documented the death of political detainee Hamdy Mohamed Mohamed Mohamed (63) on Friday, October 31, at Minya Prison, following a severe deterioration in his health and denial of necessary medical care.
According to CFJ, the deceased was a farmer from Wadi El-Rayan village in Youssef El-Seddik district, Fayoum Governorate. He had been arrested approximately a year and a half ago.
During his initial detention at Youssef El-Seddik Police Station, Hamdy underwent open-heart surgery and stent replacement, requiring continuous medical follow-up. However, he was transferred to Minya Prison without adequate healthcare, leading to a critical decline in his condition over the past four months.
Hamdy had been sentenced to 10 years in prison after retrial in the case known in the media as the “Youssef El-Seddik Police Station Break-In” of 2013.
CFJ strongly condemns the deliberate medical neglect by Minya Prison authorities that resulted in Hamdy’s death. The committee holds Egyptian authorities fully responsible for the incident and calls for an immediate investigation into the circumstances of his death, accountability for those responsible, and measures to prevent impunity.
