Geneva – April 28, 2024

The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has monitored the arrest of Ahmed Abdel Fattah Yahya, an assistant secretary-general of the trade union committee at the East Delta Company for Transport and Tourism and a member of the Committee for the Defense of Trade Union Freedoms and Labor Rights.

According to CFJ, Egyptian security forces detained Abdel Fattah on April 4, 2024, taking him to an undisclosed location. Subsequently, he was brought before the Supreme State Security Prosecution, which ordered his imprisonment for 15 days pending Case No. 2124 of 2023. He faces charges of “joining a terrorist group” and “spreading false news.”

CFJ strongly opposes this arbitrary action against Ahmed Abdel Fattah Yahya, asserting that these charges appear to be connected to his legitimate trade union and labor activism. The committee expresses unwavering solidarity with him against these unjust measures.

CFJ demands the immediate and unconditional release of Abdel Fattah, urging authorities to provide him with a safe and conducive environment in which to exercise his lawful and peaceful trade union activities.
