The “Committee for Justice” (CFJ) has condemned the actions taken by Egyptian authorities against Dr. Nada Mogheeth, the wife of detained cartoonist Ashraf Omar, and Egyptian journalist Ahmed Serag, describing these measures as arbitrary and indicative of human rights violations.
On Thursday, January 16, Dr. Mogheeth and Serag were detained by authorities. Two individuals, claiming to represent the State Security Prosecution, raided Dr. Mogheeth’s home and informed her that she was summoned for questioning. Hours later, she appeared at the Supreme State Security Prosecution office in New Cairo. Ahmed Serag was also detained following his interview with Dr. Mogheeth, which was published in December, detailing the circumstances of her husband’s arrest.
Both individuals were interrogated as part of Case No. 7 of 2025. The prosecution ordered Dr. Mogheeth’s release on a bail of 5,000 EGP, while Serag was remanded in custody for 15 days. Charges leveled against them included joining a terrorist organization and spreading false news. Additionally, Serag faced accusations of financing a terrorist organization and operating an unlicensed website to promote the organization’s ideas.
CFJ expresses strong opposition to these arbitrary measures, which it views as part of a systematic campaign against Egyptian opposition figures and activists. The committee calls for an immediate end to such practices and demands the release of journalist Ahmed Serag.
