Press Release
By: The Committee for Justice (CFJ)
Geneva: August 7, 2023
The Committee for Justice (CFJ) welcomed the decision to release 33 defendants who were held in custody on political cases in Egypt, including the lawyer and human rights advocate, Youssef Al-Mansour.
Unyielding oppression of rights advocates:
CFJ stressed that while a human rights defender is released in Egypt, others are arrested in an unending sequence of ongoing oppression against human rights defenders. CFJ urges the authorities to end this practice.
18 Months of Precautionary Detention:
The Egyptian authorities had arrested the lawyer and human rights advocate, Youssef Al-Mansour, in March 2022. He appeared a few days later at the headquarters of the Supreme State Security Prosecution, accused in case number 330 of 2022 for the Supreme State Security investigation. The prosecution charged Mansour with disseminating and broadcasting false news and statements, misuse of a social media platform “Facebook”, and joining a terrorist group while knowing its objectives.
