CFJ issues weekly bulletin on updates of major human rights cases for the period from March 8 to 13, 2025

As part of its ongoing monitoring of legal developments related to key human rights cases in Egypt, the Committee for Justice (CFJ) has released its weekly bulletin summarizing updates on major cases. The bulletin, published via its political case agenda, was designed to facilitate access to information on the dates of hearings and the latest developments in human rights cases in a simplified format that is easy to access. The updates for the period from March 8 to 13, 2025, are as follows:

  1. Case Name: Ramses Events – Al-Fath Mosque

  • Date: Saturday, March 8, 2025
  • Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Compound
  • Details: The Second Criminal Court of Appeal, presided over by Judge Hamada El-Sawy, decided to adjourn the appeal submitted by defendant Mostafa Mohamed Mahmoud Morsi, identified as Defendant No. 441 in the referral order for Case No. 8615 of 2013, Azbakeya Police Department, registered as No. 4163 of 2013 North Cairo Criminal Court, known in the media as the “Al-Fath Mosque Events,” to April 12 for review and preparation.

 

  1. Case Name: Marriott Cell

  • Date: Saturday, March 8, 2025
  • Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Compound
  • Details: The Second Criminal Court of First Instance, presided over by Judge Wagdy Mohamed Abdel Moneim, reserved the retrial of defendant Anas Abdel Wahab Khalawi, in Case No. 1145 of 2014, known in the media as the “Marriott Cell,” for March 25 to issue a verdict.

 

  1. Case Name: Moaz Al-Sharqawy – Al-Marg Forgery Cell

  • Date: Saturday, March 8, 2025
  • Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Compound
  • Details: The Second Criminal Court of First Instance, presided over by Judge Wagdy Mohamed Abdel Moneim, decided to adjourn the trial of 19 defendants accused of joining and funding a terrorist group and forging official documents for terrorist purposes, in Case No. 13330 of 2023 Al-Marg, registered as No. 1766 of 2022 Supreme State Security Investigation, known in the media as the “Al-Marg Forgery Cell,” to May 10 for the continuation of the defense’s arguments.

 

  1. Case Name: Kerdasa Explosives Cell

  • Date: Saturday, March 8, 2025
  • Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Compound
  • Details: The Second Criminal Court of First Instance, presided over by Judge Wagdy Mohamed Abdel Moneim, decided to adjourn the trial of 13 defendants in Case No. 16563 of 2023 Kerdasa Criminal Court, registered as No. 2529 of 2023 Supreme State Security Investigation, known in the media as the “Kerdasa Explosives Cell,” to April 29 to include case exhibits.

 

  1. Case Name: Kafr Hakim Church Fire in Kerdasa

  • Date: Sunday, March 9, 2025
  • Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Compound
  • Details: The Court of Appeal, presided over by Judge Hamada El-Sawy, reserved the appeal submitted by defendant Mahmoud Attia El-Sayed Abu Hamad, in the case known in the media as the “Kafr Hakim Church Fire,” for April 15 to issue a verdict. The First Criminal Court of First Instance, presided over by Judge Mohamed Said El-Sherbiny, had previously sentenced the mentioned defendant to 3 years of rigorous imprisonment in a retrial.

 

  1. Case Name: Suez Terrorist Cell

  • Date: Sunday, March 9, 2025
  • Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Compound
  • Details: The Court of Appeal, presided over by Judge Hamada El-Sawy, decided to adjourn the appeal submitted by defendant Saad El-Desouki El-Sayed Mohamed, identified as Defendant No. 24 in the referral order for the case known in the media as the “Suez Terrorist Cell,” who had been sentenced in absentia to death for targeting the Suez Canal, to April 12 for further review.

 

  1. Case Name: Trial of Yahia Moussa and 57 Defendants for ISIS Affiliation

  • Date: Sunday, March 9, 2025
  • Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Compound
  • Details: The Second Criminal Court of First Instance, presided over by Judge Wagdy Mohamed Abdel Moneim, decided to adjourn the trial of Brotherhood leader Yahia Moussa and 57 other defendants accused of joining the “ISIS” terrorist organization and plotting hostile operations to disrupt public order and threaten social peace and security, in Case No. 55 of 2024 Supreme State Security Criminal Court, registered as No. 1235 of 2024 Al-Omraniya Criminal Court, to April 12 for the defense’s arguments.

 

  1. Case Name: Abdeen Violence Events

  • Date: Sunday, March 9, 2025
  • Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Compound
  • Details: The Court of Appeal, presided over by Judge Hamada El-Sawy, issued a verdict in the appeal submitted by defendants Abdo Abdel Nabi Abdel Mageed El-Koumi and Mohamed Ali Hassan El-Nabi. The court ruled to amend the sentence for Abdo Abdel Nabi El-Koumi to one year of imprisonment with labor and ordered him to be placed under police supervision for an equivalent period starting from the end of his sentence. The court also suspended the sentence for three years. As for Mohamed Ali Hassan El-Nabi, the court accepted his appeal procedurally and ruled for his acquittal.

 

  1. Case Name: Wilayat Ismailia

  • Date: Sunday, March 9, 2025
  • Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Compound
  • Details: The Court of Appeal, presided over by Judge Hamada El-Sawy, decided to adjourn the appeal submitted by five defendants in Case No. 6482 of 2022 Shorouk Criminal Court, accused of joining a terrorist group in the case known in the media as the “Wilayat Ismailia Cell,” to April 15 for the defendants to attend from their detention and for further review.

 

  1. Case Name: Muslim Brotherhood Media Committee

  • Date: Sunday, March 9, 2025
  • Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Compound
  • Details: The Second Court of Appeal, presided over by Judge Hamada El-Sawy, decided to adjourn the appeal of six defendants affiliated with Dr. Hamza Zawba, accused of joining a terrorist group, broadcasting false news intended to disturb public order, and funding terrorist groups. The case is known in the media as the “Muslim Brotherhood Media Committees.” The session was adjourned to April 14 for the presence of the principal lawyer and further preparation.

 

  1. Case Name: Al-Zaher Violence Events

  • Date: Sunday, March 9, 2025
  • Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Compound
  • Details: The Second Criminal Court of First Instance, presided over by Judge Wagdy Mohamed Abdel Moneim, decided to reserve the retrial of defendant Waheed Abdel Latif Ibrahim, identified as Defendant No. 51 in the referral order for Case No. 3480 of 2013 Al-Zaher Misdemeanor Court, known in the media as the “Al-Zaher Violence Events,” to March 25 for the verdict.

 

  1. Case Name: Matariya Violence Events

  • Date: Sunday, March 9, 2025
  • Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Compound
  • Details: The Second Court of Appeal, presided over by Judge Hamada El-Sawy, decided to reserve the appeal submitted by defendant Mohamed Magdy Mohamed Mansy (30 years old, telecommunications engineer) in the case involving rioting and violence in Matariya. The verdict was set for April 15. The court had previously sentenced him to 15 years of rigorous imprisonment on charges of rioting, possession of unlicensed weapons, and ammunition.

 

  1. Case Name: ISIS Bulaq

  • Date: Sunday, March 9, 2025
  • Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Compound
  • Details: The Court of Appeal, presided over by Judge Hamada El-Sawy, decided to reserve the appeal submitted by defendant Hossam Raafat Mohamed Hassanien (42 years old, IT programmer) on the verdict against him for joining the “ISIS” terrorist organization in Bulaq Al-Dakrour. The session was adjourned to April 13 for the verdict. The Second Criminal Court of First Instance, presided over by Judge Wagdy Mohamed Abdel Moneim, had previously sentenced him to 10 years of imprisonment in a retrial.

 

  1. Case Name: Nahda Sit-in Dispersal

  • Date: Monday, March 10, 2025
  • Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Compound
  • Details: The Court of Appeal, presided over by Judge Hamada El-Sawy, decided to reserve the appeal submitted by defendant Gamal Mahmoud Ahmed (Defendant No. 219), Khalaf Abdel Allah Ahmed (Defendant No. 249), Shaaban Bakry Abu Seif Mohamed (Defendant No. 362), and Hosni Saad Rashad (Defendant No. 369) in Case No. 12681 of 2013 Giza Criminal Court, known in the media as the “Nahda Sit-in Dispersal,” to May 12 for the verdict.

 

  1. Case Name: Dollar Smuggling for the Brotherhood Abroad

  • Date: Monday, March 10, 2025
  • Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Compound
  • Details: The Second Criminal Court of First Instance, presided over by Judge Wagdy Mohamed Abdel Moneim, decided to adjourn the trial of a flight attendant from a prominent airline and six other individuals involved in smuggling foreign currency to members of the Muslim Brotherhood abroad. The case is registered as Case No. 12851 of 2024 First Settlement Criminal Court, listed as Case No. 386 of 2024 Supreme State Security Criminal Court. The session was adjourned to April 29 for the prosecution’s arguments.

 

  1. Case Name: Trial of a Defendant and His Wife for ISIS Affiliation

  • Date: Monday, March 10, 2025
  • Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Compound
  • Details: The Second Criminal Court of First Instance, presided over by Judge Wagdy Mohamed Abdel Moneim, decided to adjourn the first hearing in the trial of defendants Ahmed Nagi Shehata Abdel Ghani Ahmed and his wife Donia Alaa Abdel Sayed Ahmed, accused of joining the ISIS terrorist group, to April 29 for the second defendant to attend from her detention.

 

  1. Case Name: Espionage with Libya

  • Date: Monday, March 10, 2025
  • Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Compound
  • Details: The Second Criminal Court of First Instance, presided over by Judge Wagdy Mohamed Abdel Moneim, reserved the retrial of defendant Hossam Salah Mabrouk Atta, identified as Defendant No. 9 in the referral order for Case No. 95 of 2018 First Haram Criminal Court, known in the media as the “Espionage with Libya” case, to March 25 for the verdict.

 

  1. Case Name: Joining a Terrorist Group in Bulaq Al-Dakrour 1

  • Date: Monday, March 11, 2025
  • Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Compound
  • Details: The Court of Appeal, presided over by Judge Hamada El-Sawy, accepted the appeal submitted by defendant Wahib Abdel Moneim Mostafa El-Maddah, accused of joining a terrorist group in Bulaq Al-Dakrour, in Case No. 2293 of 2023. The sentence was amended to three years of imprisonment, and the court rejected the appeal on all other points.

 

  1. Case Name: Wilayat Delta

  • Date: Tuesday, March 11, 2025
  • Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Compound
  • Details: The Second Criminal Court of First Instance, presided over by Judge Wagdy Mohamed Abdel Moneim, decided to adjourn the trial of nine defendants in Case No. 379 of 2024 Supreme State Security Criminal Court, listed as Case No. 13552 of 2024 Helwan Criminal Court, known in the media as the “Wilayat Delta Terrorist Cell,” to May 10 for the defendants to attend from their detention.

 

  1. Case Name: ISIS Helwan 2

  • Date: Tuesday, March 11, 2025
  • Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Compound
  • Details: The Second Criminal Court of First Instance, presided over by Judge Wagdy Mohamed Abdel Moneim, decided to adjourn the first hearing in the trial of five defendants in Case No. 388 of 2024 Supreme State Security Criminal Court, known in the media as the “ISIS Helwan” case, to April 27 for the defendants to attend from their detention.

 

  1. Case Name: Al-Omraniya Cell

  • Date: Tuesday, March 11, 2025
  • Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Compound
  • Details: The Court of Appeal, presided over by Judge Hamada El-Sawy, decided to adjourn the appeal submitted by defendants Ahmed Badawy Ibrahim Hakim and Mohamed Khalaf Gomaa Ahmed in the case known in the media as the “ISIS Al-Omraniya Cell” to April 13 for review and preparation.
