CFJ issues weekly bulletin on updates of major human rights cases for the period from April 12 to 17, 2025

As part of its ongoing monitoring of the legal situation related to key human rights cases in Egypt, the Committee for Justice (CFJ) has issued its weekly bulletin on the latest developments in major cases. The bulletin, published via its political case agenda, was launched to facilitate access to information on hearing dates and updates on human rights cases in a simplified, accessible format. The updates for the period from April 12 to 17, 2025, are as follows:

  1. Case Name: Suez Terror Cell

    Date: Saturday, April 12, 2025
    • Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Compound
    • Details: The Second Appeals Circuit, presided over by Judge Hammad El-Sawi, decided to postpone the ruling on the appeal filed by Akram Abdel Badee Ahmed, defendant No. 21 in the case known in the media as the “Suez Terror Cell,” who was sentenced in absentia for targeting the Suez Canal, to the next session on May 13.

 

  1. Case Name: Major Terrorist Media Financing Network

    Date: Saturday, April 12, 2025
    • Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Compound
    • Details: The Second Criminal Circuit of First Instance, presided over by Judge Wagdy Abdel Monem, decided to adjourn the trial of 35 defendants, including businessmen, owners of major companies, contractors, graphic designers, and gold shop owners, in the case known in the media as the “Major Terrorist Media Financing Network,” to April 26 for further pleadings.

 

  1. Case Name: Foreign Currency Financing and Trafficking – Yehia Musa and 16 Others

    Date: Saturday, April 12, 2025
    • Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Compound
    • Details: The Second Criminal Circuit of First Instance, presided over by Judge Wagdy Abdel Monem, decided to adjourn the trial of the Muslim Brotherhood leader Yehia Musa and 16 others in the foreign currency financing and trafficking case to April 26 for further pleadings.

 

  1. Case Name: Trial of Yehia Musa and 57 Others for Joining ISIS

    Date: Saturday, April 12, 2025
    • Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Compound
    • Details: The Second Criminal Circuit of First Instance, presided over by Judge Wagdy Mohamed Abdel Monem, decided to adjourn the trial of the Muslim Brotherhood leader Yehia Musa and 57 other defendants accused of joining ISIS and planning hostile operations to disrupt public order and threaten national peace and security in Case No. 55 of 2024, Supreme State Security Criminal Court, registered under No. 1235 of 2024 Omraneya Criminal Court, to April 26 to hear witness testimonies.

 

  1. Case Name: Air Defense Events

    Date: Sunday, April 13, 2025
    • Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Compound
    • Details: The Appeals Circuit of the Criminal Court, presided over by Judge Hammad El-Sawi, reserved its ruling for the retrial of Ali Shaban Abu Al-Eit, a minor, in the case known in the media as the “Air Defense Events,” to May 10. The First Instance Criminal Court had previously sentenced the defendant to three years in prison and ordered him to pay legal expenses.

 

  1. Case Name: Revolutionary Guard

    Date: Sunday, April 13, 2025
    • Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Compound
    • Details: The Appeals Court, presided over by Judge Hammad El-Sawi, decided to adjourn the appeal filed by nine defendants accused of leading and participating in a terrorist group, known in the media as the “Revolutionary Guard,” to May 13 for the presence of the defendants from custody.

 

  1. Case Name: Restructuring Special Committees of the Muslim Brotherhood – Shorouk Cell – Supreme Administrative Committee

    Date: Sunday, April 13, 2025
    • Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Compound
    • Details: The Second Criminal Circuit of First Instance, presided over by Judge Wagdy Abdel Monem, decided to adjourn the trial of 57 defendants affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood, accused of restructuring the Supreme Administrative Committee and its auxiliary committees to continue managing the group’s activities against state institutions, known in the media as the “Shorouk Cell,” to May 24 for the presence of the defendants from custody and to continue defense arguments, while maintaining the detention of the defendants.

 

  1. Case Name: Omraneya Cell

    Date: Sunday, April 13, 2025
    • Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Compound
    • Details: The Second Appeals Circuit, presided over by Judge Hammad El-Sawi, decided to postpone the appeal filed by Ahmed Bedawy Ibrahim Hakim and Mohamed Khaled Gomaa Ahmed, defendants in the case known in the media as “ISIS Omraneya,” to May 10 for the presence of the defendants from custody. The First Instance Criminal Court, presided over by Judge Wagdy Abdel Monem, had previously sentenced the defendants to three years of hard labor.

 

  1. Case Name: ISIS Bolaq

    Date: Sunday, April 13, 2025
    • Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Compound
    • Details: The Appeals Circuit, presided over by Judge Hammad El-Sawi, issued its ruling on the appeal filed by defendant Hossam Raafat Mohamed Hassanin against the verdict convicting him of joining the ISIS group in Bolaq Dakrour. The court accepted the appeal formally and, on the merits, overturned the appealed verdict, issuing a new ruling acquitting the defendant of all charges.

 

  1. Case Name: Sabotage Cell

    Date: Sunday, April 13, 2025
    • Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Compound
    • Details: The First Criminal Circuit of First Instance, presided over by Judge Mohamed El-Saeed El-Sherbiny, decided to adjourn the first session of the trial of 23 defendants in Case No. 18739 of 2024, Nasr City First Criminal Court, known in the media as the “Sabotage Cell,” to May 25 for the presence of the defendants from custody.

 

  1. Case Name: Muslim Brotherhood Media Committee

    Date: Monday, April 14, 2025
    • Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Compound
    • Details: The Second Appeals Circuit of the Criminal Court, presided over by Judge Hammad El-Sawi, decided to adjourn the appeal of six defendants who were accomplices of Dr. Hamza Zobei’, accused of joining a terrorist group, spreading false news that disrupt public peace, and financing terrorist groups, in the case known in the media as the “Muslim Brotherhood Media Committees,” to May 12 for the attendance of the principal lawyer and further review and preparation.

 

  1. Case Name: Joker

    Date: Monday, April 14, 2025
    • Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Compound
    • Details: The Second Criminal Circuit of First Instance, presided over by Judge Wagdy Abdel Monem, decided to adjourn the retrial of 37 defendants in the case accusing the fugitive contractor Mohamed Ali of spreading false news that threaten national security and joining a group established contrary to the law and constitution—namely, the Muslim Brotherhood—in Case No. 1530 of 2020, Supreme State Security, registered under No. 653 of 2021, First Instance Tagamoa Court, known in the media as the “Joker Case,” to May 27 for pleadings.

 

  1. Case Name: ISIS Qena Cell

    Date: Monday, April 14, 2025
    • Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Compound
    • Details: The Second Criminal Circuit of First Instance, presided over by Judge Wagdy Abdel Monem, referred defendants Mohamed Arabi Abdel Aziz and Mohamed Safwat Abdel Wahab in Case No. 423 of 2023, Supreme State Security, known in the media as the “ISIS Qena Cell,” to the Grand Mufti for an opinion on their execution by hanging. The ruling is scheduled for May 27.

 

  1. Case Name: Integrated Entity – Trial of Leader Yehia Musa and 114 Others

    Date: Monday, April 14, 2025
    • Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Compound
    • Details: The Second Criminal Circuit of First Instance, presided over by Judge Wagdy Abdel Monem, decided to adjourn the trial of Muslim Brotherhood leader Yehia Musa and 114 other defendants in Case No. 383 of 2024, Supreme State Security Criminal Court, registered under No. 5490 of 2024, Qasr El-Nil Police Department, known in the media as the “Integrated Entity,” to May 26 to hear witness testimonies, with the continued detention of the defendants.

 

  1. Case Name: Murder of General Nabil Farag

    Date: Monday, April 14, 2025
    • Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Compound
    • Details: The Appeals Court, presided over by Judge Hammad El-Sawi, referred the appeal papers of Essam Abdel Meguid Diab Saeed, the second defendant in the case known in the media as the “Murder of General Nabil Farag in Kerdasa,” to the Grand Mufti for an opinion on his execution by hanging. The ruling is scheduled for June 11.

 

  1. Case Name: Storming Atfih Police Station

    Date: Monday, April 14, 2025
    • Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Compound
    • Details: The Second Appeals Circuit, presided over by Judge Hammad El-Sawi, decided to adjourn the appeals filed by Mahmoud Abdullah Mahmoud Imam (Defendant No. 16), Badee’ Abdel-Aal Abdel-Mohsen Ali (Defendant No. 48), and Ali Awais Fathy Abdel-Wahab (Defendant No. 58) in the case known in the media as the “Storming of Atfih Police Station” to May 10 for further review and preparation.

 

  1. Case Name: Ramses Events – Fateh Mosque

    Date: Monday, April 14, 2025
    • Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Compound
    • Details: The Second Appeals Circuit, presided over by Judge Hammad El-Sawi, reserved its ruling on the appeal filed by Mostafa Mohamed Mahmoud Morsi, Defendant No. 441 in Case No. 8615 of 2013, Azbakeya Police Department, and No. 4163 of 2013, North Cairo Criminal Court, known in the media as the “Fateh Mosque Events,” to May 11 for the pronouncement of the verdict.

 

  1. Case Name: Bombing of the First Grace Church in Marg

    Date: Monday, April 14, 2025
    • Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Compound
    • Details: The Second Appeals Circuit, presided over by Judge Hammad El-Sawi, decided to adjourn the appeal filed by six defendants in Case No. 31369 of 2023, Marg Criminal Court, known in the media as the “Bombing of the First Grace Church in Marg,” to May 11 for the presence of the defendants from custody.

 

  1. Case Name: ISIS Sinai Province – Ismailia
    Date: Tuesday, April 15, 2025
    • Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Compound
    • Details: The Appeals Circuit, presided over by Judge Hammad El-Sawi, decided to adjourn the appeals filed by five defendants in Case No. 6482 of 2022, Shorouk Criminal Court, accused of joining a terrorist group in the case known in the media as the “ISIS Sinai Province – Ismailia Cell,” to May 11 for further review and preparation.

 

  1. Case Name: Violent Events in Matariya

    Date: Tuesday, April 15, 2025
    • Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Compound
    • Details: The Second Appeals Circuit of the Criminal Court, presided over by Judge Hammad El-Sawi, rejected the appeal filed by defendant Mohamed Magdy Mohamed Mounis in the case of violent events in Matariya. The court upheld the original verdict sentencing the defendant to 15 years of hard labor and ordered his placement under police surveillance for five years following the completion of his sentence.

 

  1. Case Name: Arson of Kafr Hakeem Church in Kerdasa

    Date: Tuesday, April 15, 2025
    • Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Compound
    • Details: The Appeals Circuit, presided over by Judge Hammad El-Sawi, rejected the appeal filed by defendant Mahmoud Atia El-Sayed Abu Hammad in the case known in the media as the “Arson of Kafr Hakeem Church” in Kerdasa. The court upheld the original verdict sentencing the defendant to three years of hard labor.

 

  1. Case Name: Special Operations Groups

    Date: Tuesday, April 15, 2025
    • Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Compound
    • Details: The Second Criminal Circuit of First Instance, presided over by Judge Wagdy Abdel Monem, decided to adjourn the trial of 73 defendants accused of joining a terrorist group and committing hostile operations in the case known in the media as the “Special Operations Groups” to May 13 for the prosecution’s pleadings.
