Press Release

The UN Committee on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families has expressed concerns over some of Egypt’s policies and practices affecting migrant workers and their families, focusing specifically on mass deportations and the rights of unaccompanied migrant children.

Mass Deportations of Sudanese Nationals

The Committee raised serious concerns about reports of mass deportations of Sudanese nationals from Egypt. These practices, according to the Committee, may violate Egypt’s international obligations to protect refugees and migrants. It called on the Egyptian government to clarify the legal basis and procedures for these deportations and ensure compliance with international laws, particularly in light of the increasing number of Sudanese fleeing armed conflict in their country.

– Conditions of Unaccompanied Migrant Minors

The Committee also highlighted concerns about the protection of unaccompanied migrant children, especially those arriving from conflict zones such as Sudan, Syria, and Palestine. Experts questioned the measures taken by Egyptian authorities to ensure these children receive adequate protection and care, including shelter, education, and healthcare. They further emphasized that the lack of a comprehensive legal framework could expose these children to exploitation or neglect.

– Response from the Egyptian Delegation

The Egyptian delegation affirmed the country’s commitment to protecting migrant children, regardless of their legal status or nationality. The delegation noted that national mechanisms are in place to support and protect these children, including partnerships with international and local organizations to provide essential services.

– Committee’s Recommendations

The Committee urged the Egyptian authorities to establish clear and transparent policies prohibiting the mass deportation of migrants. It emphasized the importance of reviewing each case individually in accordance with international legal standards, pointing out that mass deportations could endanger migrants and refugees by forcing them to return to conflict zones or face persecution, which violates their fundamental rights.

The Committee also called for strengthened national legislation to protect the rights of migrant children, particularly unaccompanied minors. It recommended adopting a comprehensive legal framework to provide effective protection for these children, ensuring they have access to basic services such as education, healthcare, and safe housing.

Furthermore, the Committee stressed the need for enhanced coordination with international and local organizations working in the field of refugee and migrant rights. It described such collaboration as essential for ensuring the necessary services are provided and for meeting Egypt’s commitments under international agreements on the protection of migrant workers and their families.
