Geneva 19th of August 2020

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, announced on Wednesday the appointment of the members of the Independent Fact-Finding Mission on Libya.

Names of the members of the mission:

On 22 June 2020, the Human Rights Council established a Fact-Finding Mission in Libya to document violations and abuses of human rights by all parties in Libya since the beginning of 2016, in light of the deterioration of security and the absence of a functioning judicial system there.

The members of the mission are: Mohamed Auajjar (Morocco), Tracy Robinson (Jamaica), and Chaloka Beyani (Zambia and UK).

The role of the fact-finding mission:

On the role of the fact-finding mission, Bachelet said:

“This body of experts will serve as an essential mechanism to effectively address the widespread impunity for human rights violations and abuses committed, and can also serve as a deterrent to prevent further violations and contribute to peace and stability in the country,”

‘’Summary executions and other unlawful killings, torture and ill-treatment, gender-based violence, including conflict-related sexual violence, abductions, enforced disappearances, as well as incitement to violence on social media, continue to be committed in a climate of complete impunity,’’ she added.

The Independent Fact-Finding Mission on Libya is expected to provide an oral update to the Human Rights Council in September and a comprehensive written report on the human rights situation in Libya, including efforts to prevent and ensure accountability for human rights violations and abuses.
