Sudan: Monitoring the killing of four media workers in an attack on the presidential palace in Khartoum amid calls for investigation and accountability

The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has confirmed the killing of four members of the Sudanese National Television team in a bombing attack carried out by a suicide driver on the morning of Friday, March 21, while they were covering the Sudanese armed forces’ control over the Republican Palace in central Khartoum.

Initial investigations indicate that the media team was broadcasting live from near the presidential palace when it was targeted, reportedly by a suicide operation carried out by an individual who infiltrated military positions in a suspicious vehicle, causing a massive explosion. The blast killed three members of the team instantly: Farouq Al-Zaher – producer and program director, Magdi Abdel Rahman – television cameraman, and driver Wajih Jafar. Ibrahim Mudawi, editor and director, succumbed to his injuries several hours later.

The CFJ stresses that these victims were carrying out their journalistic duties under extremely dangerous conditions. This necessitates an independent and transparent investigation to reveal the full circumstances of the incident, identify the real causes that led to putting the lives of this team at risk, and hold those responsible accountable to prevent them from escaping justice.
