Sudan: Committee for Justice Condemns Death and Prison Sentences in Cases Related to Alleged Cooperation with RSF, Calls for Fair Trial Guarantees

The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has condemned the rulings issued by the Khartoum East Court “B”, which sentenced five individuals to death by hanging, including one foreign national, in addition to sentencing three others to five years’ imprisonment, after convicting them on charges related to cooperation with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), waging war against the state, and undermining the constitutional order.

The Committee expressed concern over the expansion in the use of death sentences amid the exceptional conditions facing the country, and the concerns surrounding several cases of a political and security nature regarding the extent to which fair trial guarantees and defense rights are being upheld.

The Committee for Justice reaffirmed its rejection of the death penalty, calling for ensuring the independence of the judiciary, safeguarding defendants’ rights to legal defense and appeal, and adhering to international fair trial standards, while refraining from using the judiciary as a tool in the context of the ongoing conflict.
