Sudan: CFJ reports arrest of humanitarian activist in Sennar by military intelligence, demands his release

Press release

Geneva – June 30, 2024

Security forces affiliated with the Sudanese Army’s military intelligence have arrested a humanitarian activist and volunteer in the city of Sennar, central Sudan, following a Facebook post he made.

The activist, Taher Salah, was detained on Thursday, June 13, after his brother was arrested to pressure Salah into surrendering himself, which he subsequently did.

In his Facebook post, Salah criticized the military intelligence’s move to arm civilians in his neighborhood of Sennar Al-Taqatu, targeting young men and forcing them to take up arms under the pretext of protecting the neighborhood from security breakdowns.

The Committee for Justice (CFJ) condemned the targeting of Taher Salah and his family by military intelligence, stressing that his arrest is a violation of his right to free expression. CFJ calls for his immediate release and an end to the targeting of him and his family.
