Libya: Committee for Justice Documents the Enforced Disappearance of Seven Civilians Near Ras Ajdir Crossing on Grounds of Regional Affiliation

The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has documented information indicating that seven civilians were subjected to enforced disappearance after being intercepted and detained near the Ras Ajdir border crossing while returning from the Republic of Tunisia to the city of Misrata.

According to CFJ’s documentation, the group was intercepted at dawn on 11 June 2026 by armed individuals in the vicinity of the Ras Ajdir border crossing, before being taken to an undisclosed location, without any disclosure of their places of detention or allowing their families to communicate with them.

According to the available information, the missing individuals are: Abdulsalam Mohamed Al‑Habhhab, Miftah Abdulsalam Belam, Abdullah Mohamed Belam, Mohamed Al‑Hassan, Sharaf Al‑Din Milad Al‑Sattash, Othman Abubakr Salama, and his son Mohamed Othman Salama.

Information documented by the Committee indicates that Othman Abubakr Salama is an elderly man suffering from cancer, and was traveling with his son to Tunisia for medical treatment before they were detained and disappeared upon their return to Libya.

The information further indicates that the incident is linked to the victims’ affiliation with the city of Misrata, amid previous tensions related to the detention of individuals from the city of Zuwara, raising serious concerns about the targeting of individuals on the basis of social identity or regional affiliation.

The Committee for Justice expressed deep concern over the continued lack of information regarding the detainees’ fate and whereabouts, noting that such circumstances amount to enforced disappearance and expose them to serious risks affecting their safety and fundamental rights.

CFJ calls for the immediate disclosure of their fate and whereabouts, guarantees for their physical and psychological safety, and enabling them to communicate with their families and obtain all necessary legal safeguards.
