Libya: Committee for Justice Documents the Enforced Disappearance of a 70‑Year‑Old Man Following His Arrest from His Home in Benghazi

The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has documented the arrest of Libyan citizen Jumaa Faraj Al‑Faitouri (70 years old) from his home in the city of Benghazi in eastern Libya, followed by a complete loss of contact with him and the absence of any information regarding his place of detention or the authority responsible for his custody.

According to information documented by CFJ, an armed group affiliated with the 210 Infantry Battalion, under the Ground Forces Command of the Libyan Armed Forces General Command, raided Al‑Faitouri’s home in the Sidi Khalifa area of Benghazi on 31 May 2026, after Maghrib prayers, and arrested him, taking him to an undisclosed location.

Available information indicates that the arrest was carried out inside his home and in front of his family members, amid an atmosphere of intimidation during the raid, without any announcement of the reasons for his arrest or disclosure of his place of detention or legal status.

According to CFJ, Jumaa Faraj Al‑Faitouri is known as a follower of Sufi orders, and no official information has so far been provided regarding his fate or whereabouts.

The Committee for Justice expressed deep concern over his continued disappearance since the date of his arrest, noting that deprivation of liberty followed by refusal to disclose the fate or whereabouts of a person raises serious concerns of enforced disappearance, constituting a violation of fundamental guarantees under international human rights law.

CFJ calls for the immediate disclosure of his whereabouts, enabling his family to communicate with him, and ensuring that he enjoys all his legal and human rights.
