Tunisia: CFJ rejects continued detention of former Minister of Justice Noureddine Bhiri and calls for his immediate release

Press Release

The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has monitored the decision of the Criminal Chamber of the Tunis First Instance Court, which refused the release of former Minister of Justice and Ennahda leader, Noureddine Bhiri, postponing his trial until next October.

These developments come amidst accusations directed at Bhiri, including orchestrating an attack on state institutions, inciting people to attack one another, and provoking chaos and violence in the country. The case is based on a social media post attributed to him.

Calls for his release:

CFJ stresses that Bhiri’s trial raises concerning trends regarding the restriction of freedom of expression in Tunisia, particularly as the case against him revolves around a social media post. CFJ views this as a form of repressive practice aimed at silencing the voices of opposition figures and political activists in the country. CFJ emphasizes the importance of respecting fundamental freedoms and adhering to international human rights standards during this critical phase in Tunisia’s history.

CFJ also firmly rejects the arbitrary measures taken against Noureddine Bhiri, deeming his detention a violation of freedom of speech. CFJ demands his immediate release and the cessation of all forms of targeting activists and human rights defenders in the country. Additionally, the Committee calls on the authorities to ensure a safe environment that allows activists to perform their duties freely, without fear of persecution or intimidation.
