Tunisia: CFJ monitors violations against activist Souar Barqawi and calls for her immediate release

Press Release

The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has monitored a series of violations against Tunisian political activist Souar Barqawi, who serves as the Treasurer of the “Azmoun” Movement and a volunteer in the campaign of detained presidential candidate Al-Ayachi Zammal.

Barqawi was arrested on September 27, 2024, after being accused of forging electoral endorsements based on complaints filed by some citizens. She was initially sentenced to three years in prison in four separate cases, resulting in a total sentence of 12 years.

According to CFJ, Barqawi has faced a series of security-related harassments and mistreatment since August 2024, amidst increasing pressure on political opposition figures.

CFJ calls on Tunisian authorities to immediately release Souar Barqawi and drop all charges against her, stressing that the treatment of Barqawi and other opposition members constitutes a blatant infringement on their constitutionally and internationally protected rights. CFJ urges the cessation of using the judiciary as a tool to exclude political rivals.
