Tunisia: CFJ condemns assault on human rights defender Nizar Ben Hassan; Urges swift action to stop violence against civil society activists

The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has condemned the recent attack on Nizar Ben Hassan, a prominent journalist, human rights defender, and president of the Association for the Development of the Chebbi Student in Cheba, Tunisia. The incident occurred when unknown individuals assaulted Ben Hassan in front of his residence in Cheba, Mahdia.

CFJ, in its statement, detailed that the assault took place late on Thursday, February 15, 2024, resulting in Ben Hassan being urgently transferred to Taher Safar Hospital in Mahdia. Currently in intensive care, he sustained injuries to the head and eye, necessitating surgical intervention. The Public Prosecution has initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack.

Expressing full solidarity with Nizar Ben Hassan, CFJ has called upon Tunisian authorities to escalate the investigation, unravel the case specifics, and ensure those responsible are held accountable for their actions. The organization has condemned the incident, denouncing all forms of violence.

Notably, Nizar Ben Hassan, recognized as a human rights activist, student rights defender, and civil society advocate, is facing a trial before the Court of Appeal. The charges reportedly relate to his journalistic opinions and student rights advocacy.

In light of these events, CFJ reiterates its commitment to championing the rights of individuals like Nizar Ben Hassan and urges the Tunisian authorities to address the broader issue of violence against civil society activists. The organization emphasizes the need for immediate and effective measures to curb the rising tide of violence, ensuring a safer environment for those dedicated to the promotion of human rights and social justice in Tunisia.
