Sudan: Committee for Justice Expresses Concern Over an Arrest Warrant Issued Against Journalist Sabah Mohamed Al‑Hassan and Calls for an End to the Targeting of Journalists

The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has expressed concern over an arrest warrant issued by the Prosecution for Crimes Directed Against the State and Counter‑Terrorism in Khartoum against journalist Sabah Mohamed Al‑Hassan, in connection with a criminal complaint registered under No. (81) of 2026.

According to the warrant, the journalist faces charges under several articles of the 1991 Sudanese Criminal Code, including undermining the constitutional order, waging war against the state, inciting hatred against regular forces, as well as spreading false news and inciting sedition.

CFJ also reported that the Prosecution issued instructions to the police to arrest Al‑Hassan and place her in custody to complete investigation procedures.

The Committee for Justice considers that bringing serious charges against journalists on the basis of their media work or opinions raises grave concerns regarding press freedom and freedom of expression, particularly amid the escalation of prosecutions related to publishing and journalistic activities in Sudan.

CFJ calls for respecting legal safeguards and journalists’ rights, refraining from using legal provisions to restrict freedom of expression and journalistic work, and adhering to international standards related to the protection of journalists and the guarantee of freedom of opinion and publication.
