Sudan: Committee for Justice Documents the Arrest of a UN Staff Member in Kauda and Calls for Her Immediate Release

The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has documented the continued detention of human rights activist and United Nations staff member Najwa Moussa Kawanda in the Kauda area of South Kordofan State since 1 April 2026, in connection with her efforts to resolve tribal conflicts in the Dibei area of the Nuba Mountains.

According to information provided by the Strategic Initiative of Women of the Horn of Africa “Sayha”, Najwa Moussa has remained in detention for more than a month, amid a lack of information about her whereabouts and growing concerns regarding her health condition.

The Committee for Justice stated that the continued detention of a human rights activist and UN staff member outside legal safeguards raises serious concerns about her safety, and reflects an escalation in restrictions imposed on activists and human rights defenders in conflict‑affected areas.

CFJ calls on the Sudanese authorities to immediately release Najwa Moussa Kawanda, ensure her physical and psychological safety, refrain from subjecting her to any form of violations or pressure, and respect the fundamental rights of detainees in accordance with humanitarian and legal standards.

It is worth noting that Najwa Moussa Kawanda is considered one of the most prominent women leaders in the Nuba Mountains, and previously participated as part of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement–North delegation in peace negotiations during the period of the former Inqaz regime.
