Sudan: Committee for Justice Documents Shelling of an IDP Camp in Zalingei Resulting in Deaths and Injuries, Calls for Investigation

The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has documented an aerial bombardment that targeted the Al‑Hamidiya Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) Camp in the city of Zalingei, Central Darfur State, at dawn on 27 April 2026. The attack resulted in the killing of six civilians, the injury of dozens with varying degrees of severity, and the destruction of a number of shelters inside the camp.

According to CFJ’s documentation, the camp is a civilian facility housing thousands of displaced persons fleeing the conflict, the majority of whom are women and children, and provides essential humanitarian services amid deteriorating living conditions in the region.

Information indicates that shells landed inside the camp, causing panic among residents and extensive damage to infrastructure and IDP shelters, threatening the continuity of basic services at the site.

CFJ stated that targeting an IDP camp raises serious concerns regarding civilian safety and constitutes a violation of international humanitarian law, particularly principles related to the protection of civilian objects and the obligation to distinguish between military and civilian targets.

The Committee also warned of the serious humanitarian consequences of such attacks, including the disruption of shelter, healthcare, and food services, and the further deterioration of conditions for vulnerable groups, especially women and children.

The Committee for Justice calls for an urgent and independent investigation into the incident, the protection of civilians and displacement sites, an end to the targeting of humanitarian infrastructure, and strict adherence to the rules of international humanitarian law.
