The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has documented an escalation of violations against journalists and media workers in Sudan by both parties to the conflict—the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF)—amid ongoing arbitrary arrests, enforced disappearances, and selective prosecutions.
According to CFJ’s documentation, violations against journalists include arrest outside the framework of the law, torture and ill‑treatment, and killings, in addition to the detention of journalists under harsh and inhumane conditions, within a context marked by increasing restrictions on press freedom and media work.
The Committee stressed that targeting journalists constitutes a serious threat to freedom of expression and the public’s right to access information, noting that such practices contribute to information blackouts and undermine the role of the media in documenting and exposing violations.
CFJ also highlighted the continued detention and disappearance of a number of journalists and media workers, including Abdelaziz Arja, Issam Mohamed Haroun, Musab Al‑Hadi, Mostafa Fadl Al‑Moula, Magdy Youssef Al‑Zein, Ashraf Al‑Hibr, Muammar Ibrahim, and Adam Ishaq Manan.
The Committee for Justice calls for the immediate release of all journalists arbitrarily detained, the disclosure of the fate of those forcibly disappeared, and the protection of journalists and media workers, while urging an end to all forms of targeting and violations against them, and accountability for those responsible in accordance with international humanitarian law and international human rights standards.
