The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has condemned a ruling issued by a military court sentencing humanitarian activist Najwa Musa Konda to one year in prison over a social media post attributed to her.
CFJ documented that the activist had remained in detention since April 2026 for a period of three months before the judgment was issued on 14 July 2026. The case reportedly stemmed from a social media post in which she criticized alleged violations committed by forces affiliated with the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA). Available information indicates that she remained in detention throughout the pretrial period without being informed of the charges against her.
According to information documented by the Committee, Najwa Musa Konda is currently being held in Tabanya Prison, south of Kadugli in South Kordofan State, amid reports of difficult humanitarian conditions, including restrictions on family visits and denial of access to medication and healthcare despite reported health concerns.
The Committee also noted reports indicating that a number of residents of the Otoro area and humanitarian workers have been detained without being brought before courts, raising concerns about the widening scope of restrictions imposed on civilians and humanitarian actors in areas under the Movement’s control.
CFJ calls for the immediate release of Najwa Musa Konda, ensuring her access to the necessary medical care, and respecting fair trial guarantees. The Committee further urges an end to the detention of civilians for the peaceful exercise of their rights to freedom of opinion and expression, in accordance with the obligations established under international human rights law.
