Sudan: CFJ monitors prevention of passport issuance to lawyer Hanan Hassan, calls for end to arbitrary actions against her

Press release
Geneva – July 25, 2024

The Sudanese prosecution has prohibited the issuance of a passport to lawyer and Sudanese Congress Party legal sector member, Hanan Hassan, according to Sudanese embassy authorities in Kampala, Uganda.

The Committee for Justice (CFJ) denounces these arbitrary actions against Hanan Hassan, emphasizing that the right to freedom of movement is a fundamental human right enshrined in international human rights law. This includes an individual’s right to leave and return to their country at will. Any obstruction or denial of this right constitutes a human rights violation warranting accountability.

CFJ urges Sudanese authorities to cease these arbitrary measures and allow Hanan Hassan to obtain a passport, ensuring her freedom of movement is not hindered.
