The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has documented the killing of Awad Shehat Al‑Karimi Al‑Obeidi, aged 41, inside Qarnada Military Prison, which is affiliated with the General Command of the Libyan Arab Armed Forces, following his alleged exposure to torture, on Thursday, 16 July 2026.
According to information documented by CFJ, Al‑Karimi’s body was found near a hospital in the city of Benghazi before being handed over to his family. The victim was a resident of Al‑Nour district in the city of Tobruk.
The Committee for Justice stresses that deaths occurring in places of detention, particularly in cases involving allegations or evidence of torture and ill‑treatment, constitute a grave violation of the right to life and physical integrity and require a full disclosure of the circumstances surrounding the incident and accountability for those responsible, in accordance with national and international legal standards.
CFJ calls for a prompt, independent, and transparent investigation into the circumstances of Awad Shehat Al‑Karimi Al‑Obeidi’s death, the disclosure of all relevant facts, and the prosecution of those responsible for any violations established through the investigation.
