The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has documented a case of arbitrary dismissal involving journalist Naira Al‑Gabri, a correspondent for Al‑Fagr newspaper in Port Said Governorate, following her demands for her financial rights and the submission of an official complaint to the Labor Office.
According to statements made by the journalist, she worked for the newspaper for 12 years without an employment contract or social insurance coverage. She also indicated that salaries for employees of the institution had not been paid since June 2025. On 21 July 2026, she filed a complaint demanding the implementation of the minimum wage and the payment of overdue financial entitlements.
Al‑Gabri further stated that the management of the institution disabled her access to the newspaper’s electronic system. She initially believed the issue was due to a technical malfunction, before later being informed that the suspension of her account had been ordered by management. She described the measure as a retaliatory action taken in response to her efforts to claim her labor rights.
The Committee for Justice calls for an end to retaliatory practices against journalists and media workers for asserting their legitimate rights, and urges respect for labor rights, payment of outstanding financial entitlements, and the provision of legal protections for journalists against arbitrary dismissal.
