Libya: Committee for Justice Calls for an Urgent Investigation into the Death of Omar Al‑Farsi Inside Al‑Kuwayfiyah Prison in Benghazi

The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has called for an urgent investigation into the death of Libyan citizen Omar Aqilah Al‑Farsi Al‑Agouri (64 years old), whose body was found inside Al‑Kuwayfiyah Prison in the city of Benghazi, following a period of detention, according to information reported by human rights organizations.

According to reports by his family and human rights groups, Al‑Farsi had been detained since 2024 inside a detention facility in Benghazi, before he was found dead inside the prison. The reports indicate signs of a deterioration in his health during detention and the absence of necessary medical care.

Human rights organizations also reported that Al‑Farsi was subjected during detention to ill‑treatment and medical neglect, which led to a gradual decline in his health condition without the provision of appropriate healthcare, raising concerns about detention conditions inside some facilities.

The Committee for Justice stated that this case raises serious questions regarding the conditions of detainees inside detention facilities, particularly in light of recurring reports of medical negligence, ill‑treatment, and the lack of effective oversight.

CFJ calls for the conduct of an independent and transparent investigation into the circumstances of the death, accountability for those responsible, and ensuring compliance with international human rights standards inside places of detention, including the provision of medical care and the protection of the right to life and the safety of detainees.
