Egypt: The CFJ rejects investigation of physician and unionist Khaled Amin for expressing his opinion, and calls for halting all punitive measures against him.

The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has reported the summons of Dr. Khaled Amin, Assistant Secretary-General of the Syndicate of Physicians, for investigation by the Egyptian Public Prosecution regarding a complaint filed against him by the Ministry of Health.

The prosecution later released him under residential bail following an extensive interrogation session attended by the President of the Medical Syndicate, Dr. Osama Abdel Hay, and the syndicate’s legal advisor Mahmoud Abbas.

The entire board of the Medical Syndicate, along with a large number of physicians, attended the prosecution’s office in solidarity with Dr. Khaled Amin, emphasizing that union activity is not a crime, but rather a constitutional right guaranteed by law.

They stressed that holding a syndicate representative accountable for professional statements aimed at shedding light on professional issues constitutes a dangerous precedent that threatens freedom of expression and the very essence of trade union work.

During the investigation session, Dr. Amin refuted all accusations brought against him, presenting official documents and documented studies supporting his position and confirming the accuracy of the statements he made during his appearance on a television program.

The CFJ expresses concern over the targeting of the Assistant Secretary-General of the Egyptian Medical Syndicate for merely expressing his opinion, and insists on safeguarding freedom of expression, union activities, and the rule of law. The committee calls for an immediate halt to all these arbitrary measures taken against him.
