Egypt: The CFJ Monitors the First Trial Session of Hoda Abd El-Moneim and Calls for Her Release and a Fair Trial

The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has monitored that the Cairo Court of Appeals has set May 14, 2025, as the date for the first hearing in the trial of human rights defender, lawyer, and former member of Egypt’s National Council for Human Rights, Hoda Abd El-Moneim. The trial will take place in Case No. 730 of 2020, referred to the Supreme State Security Prosecution, before the Second Circuit of the Terrorism Crimes Division of the Cairo Criminal Court.

Abd El-Moneim, who recently completed a five-year prison sentence in Case No. 1552 of 2018 and was re-detained pending the current case, faces similar charges, including “joining a banned group” and “financing terrorism.”

The CFJ expresses deep concern regarding the conduct of Abd El-Moneim’s trial, emphasizing that this case is part of a systematic pattern of judicial harassment targeting human rights defenders in Egypt. The committee holds the Egyptian authorities fully responsible for her safety, especially given the ongoing deterioration of her health while in detention.

The CFJ calls for her immediate and unconditional release. If the trial continues, it demands that the proceedings be held in a court that meets the standards of a fair trial. Additionally, the committee stresses the urgent need to allow visits from her family and independent medical teams to assess her health condition and provide her with the necessary care immediately.
